Carving time in stone: Danyang's Jeokseongbi Monument of Silla

신라적성비

On a winter day in 1978, less than a week after the New Year, a team of researchers conducting academic research in Danyang stumbled upon a treasure buried deep in the earth while looking for a stone to dust off their muddy shoes. After careful and cautious excavation, a large stele was unearthed. The treasure, which had an extraordinary look to it, was the Danyang Jeokseongbi Monument of Silla.
Established to stabilize public sentiment when Silla captured Jeokseong, a territory belonging to Goguryeo, the Jeokseongbi Monument commemorates the merits of Jeokseong people who helped Silla expand its territory and gave their loyalty, and also promises to give the same reward to those who remain loyal to Silla in the future.
At first glance, it's just an ordinary stone, a precious treasure that might have otherwise been buried. It makes us feel grateful for its existence after sleeping under the ground for so many years to give us a piece of history.
