A cave square with mysterious light

(not open to the public)

일광굴

This limestone cave is located in the middle of Samtaesan Mountain in Eosangcheon-myeon, and is called "Ilgwanggul Cave (Daylight Cave)" because sunlight shines through a hole in the ceiling.

The cave is 1 kilometer long, and the narrow entrance was widened in the 1930s by Jo Jong-seung, the governor of Eosangcheon-myeon to allow people to enter and exit. About 60 meters in, you'll find a stone tomb with collapsed stalactites, and a little further on you'll find a dome-shaped plaza. In the center of this plaza, sunlight streams through a hole in the ceiling, creating a truly magical scene.

Inside the cave is a 6-meter-high stone tablet with a checkerboard on it, and it is said that the gods used to come down through the hole in the ceiling and play checkers.

The cave is currently closed due to the risk of falling rocks.
