The three most beloved peaks of the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang Danyang Dodamsambong Peaks
(Eight Scenic Views of Danyang/National Scenic Site/National Geopark)
Dodamsambong Peaks, the most popular of the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang, is the only place in Korea where three rocky peaks stand side by side in the middle of the Namhangang River.
It is said that the founding contributor of the Joseon Dynasty, Jeong Do-jeon, spent his childhood here and loved it so much that he named his art name 'Sambong'. Later generations built a statue of him here so that he could always look at Danyang Dodamsambong Peaks.
Danyang Dodamsambong Peaks were designated as a National Scenic Site* in 2008 and have long been a favorite spot for poets and painters due to the harmonious view of the Namhangang River, Sobaeksan Mountain, and the surrounding landscape. You can see countless works by painters such as Toegye Yi Hwang, Danwon Kim Hongdo, Gyeomjae Jeong Seon, Chusa Kim Jeong-hui, and Giya Lee Bang-woon at the Sambong Story Hall in the Dodamsambong Peaks.
*1 As of 2022, there are 132 National Scenic Sites in Korea.
Danyang Dodamsambong Peaks can be visited and enjoyed at any time of the year, but it is especially mysterious and enchanting when visited on early spring and fall mornings with the water mist, and even more so with the sunrise over Sobaeksan Mountain. Near Danyang Dodamsambong Peaks is Stone Gate, one of the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang, so don't miss it.
Danyang Dodamsambong Peaks Pavilion - The Sufferings of Samdojeong Pavillion
The pavilion on the largest peak was built under the name of 'Nyeungyeongjeong' by Jo Jeong-se, the governor of Danyang during the Joseon Dynasty (1766), but it was immediately demolished due to noise complaints from the residents who lived in front of it, and it went through the twists and turns of being rebuilt several times. The current Dodamsambong Peaks pavilion, Samdojeong Pavillion, was rebuilt with concrete instead of wood after it was destroyed in the Great Flood of 1972. Oddly enough, the pavilion adds to the beauty of Danyang Dodamsambong Peaks.
- How Danyang Dodamsambong Peaks got its name
- The village across the river was called Dodam, meaning "island" and "deep," and until the Sambongdaegyo Bridge was completed, it was an inland island that could only be reached by boat. They are called 'Dodamsambong Peaks' because they are the three majestic peaks in front of the Dodam Village, which is surrounded by the winding Namhangang River. Currently, the Dodam Garden has been built across the river, where visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery with the scent of flowers, and the Stone Gate can be seen from across the river, attracting many tourists.
- Sambong Jeong Do-jeon and Danyang Dodamsambong Peaks
- It is said that Sambongsan Mountain, which was originally located in Jeongseon, Gangwon-do, drifted down during a flood and became the Dodamsambong Peaks. At the time, Jeongseon was collecting taxes on Sambong, which had floated all the way to Danyang. Jeong Do-jeon, a 7-year-old boy at the time, stood up and argued, "We didn't ask for the Sambongsan Mountain to come all the way from Jeongseon, but rather, there is no reason to pay taxes on a useless mountain that is blocking waterways and causing damage, so take it back." After that, they stopped paying taxes.
How Danyang Dodamsambong Peaks were created.
The story that they floated down from Jeongseon was probably made up by later generations to prove the wisdom of Jeong Do-jeon, so you might be wondering how Danyang Dodamsambong Peaks were actually created. The Danyang Dodamsambong Peaks were formed over two million years ago when the mountain stream that descended to the middle of the river was melted by water flowing from the Namhangang River and Maepocheon Stream for hundreds of millions of years, and the reason why only three peaks remained was because they contain a substance called 'dolomite' that is not easily soluble in water. Danyang Dodamsambong Peaks are also designated as one of the first National Geoparks in the Chungcheong-do region.
Looking at Danyang Dodamsambong Peaks, if you draw an imaginary line from Ihyangjeong Pavilion, a pavilion on the right side of the mountain, you can imagine the original mountain stream.
※ In 1985, the completion of the Chungju Dam displaced the village in front of Dodamsambong Peaks (the current area of the parking lot and Maepocheon Stream), and more than 300 families pooled their money to build a pavilion called 'Ihyangjeong Pavilion' to remember the village. You can visit it on foot from Dodamsambong Peaks.
