The two large rocks in the center of Seonamgyegok Valley Danyang Jungseonam Rock

(Eight Scenic Views of Danyang/Woraksan National Park/National Geopark)

Named by Gokwoon Kim Soo-jeung, a scholar of the Joseon Dynasty during King Hyojong's reign, Danyang Jungseonam Rock is located in the center of three of the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang in Seonamgyegok Valley.

There are two large rocks at Jungseonam, Okyeomdae and Myeonggyeongdae, with the inscription "Sagungangsan Samseonsu seok" on Okyeomdae. This is an inscription of the words of Gilbo Yoon Heon-ju (1717), who served as the governor of Chungcheong Province, which means "Of the four nearby areas (Danyang, Jecheon, Yeongchun, and Cheongpung), Sangseonam Rock, Jungseonam Rock, and Haseonam Rock are the most beautiful." Interestingly, the name of the stonemason who carved it and the date are also recorded.

It's not uncommon to find the names of visitors at scenic spots, and the Danyang Jungseonam Rock has the names of over 300 ancestors carved into it. Unlike Sangseonam Rock and Haseonam Rock, it's located about 200 meters off the road, but you don't want to miss it.
Toegye Yi Hwang called the valley "the place where the gods roam," and hence named the Seonamgyegok Valley "Samseongugok".
