A Journey to Danyang Along the Trail(Waterway)
An indigo-colored journey along the Namhangang River Waterway
The waterways of Danyang, where the East and West Rivers meet and lead to the Namhangang River, are surrounded by the Baekdudaegan Sobaeksan Mountain Range. The natural scenery of the deep mountains and valleys, and the indigo-colored waves leading to Cheongpungho Lake and Chungjuho Lake are beautifully spread out.
The rafting course that starts from Osa-ri in Yeongchun-myeon, at the foot of Taehwasan Mountain, is spectacular with stone walls lining the flowing Namhangang River like folding screens. Especially in spring and fall, the azaleas and autumn leaves add to the beauty, which is known as the North Wall.
After the fun rafting along the North Wall, Ondal Tourist Area is located along the 595th Route.
A designated tourist destination in Danyang, Ondal Tourist Area has various tourist attractions, including Ondalsanseong Fortress, Ondaldonggul Cave, and a theme park, where you can experience the legend of General Ondal, the famous Goguryeo general.
Along the waterway, various cultural relics such as the Three-story Stone Pagoda in Hyangsan-ri and Jo Ja-hyeong's House attract visitors. The waterway leads to Dodamsambong Peak through Stone Gate, a large rainbow-shaped stone gate that looks like a gate for heavenly fairies to come and go.
Dodamsambong Peak, which is one of the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang, has three peaks towering in the middle of the Namhangang River where the clear waters of the river wind its way, it is one of the best views of the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang.
The surrounding area is equipped with parking lots, tourist facilities, and shops for tourists to enjoy a relaxing view of Dodamsambong Peak and Stone Gate.
View of Gosudaegyo Bridge, Oksunbong Peak, Gudambong peak
After passing Dodamsambong Peak, as you approach Danyang Center, the waterway is greeted by the large Gosudaegyo Bridge.
There is a marina in Danyang center, so you can take a cruise ship or other large boats to Janghoenaru and Cheongpungnaru, but it is only open in summer when the water is full.
The river flows through the town center of Danyang, and as it passes by Sangjindaegyo Bridge, it becomes a larger stream, creating a refreshing landscape.
Upon reaching Danyangdaegyo Bridge, it meets the cool stream that flows through the triplets of Sainam Rock and Seonam Rock to reach Gudambong Peak and Oksunbong Peak, the last of the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang.
The rocky cliffs are called Gudam because their rock formations resemble turtles and the rocks in the water have turtle patterns.
Together with the nearby Jebibong Peak, it is one of the most spectacular scenic spots along Danyang's waterway travel course. Oksunbong is called Oksun because the white and blue rocks rise up strongly and look like bamboo shoots. It is also nicknamed Salt River because it has a long history of being the border between Jecheon and Danyang, when Toegye Yi Hwang, who was appointed as the governor of Danyang in the Joseon Dynasty during King Myeongjong's reign, inscribed "Gateway to Danyang" on the rock wall.
The Namhangang River, which flows through Oksunbong Peak, passes through Oksundaegyo Bridge, passing its beautiful waters to Cheongpungho Lake.
It leads to a larger waterway and bids farewell to Danyang. The waterway used to be a place of daily life where people used to pass by raft, and although it is no longer passable by boat, the beautiful scenery of Danyang along the waterway attracts many people to visit.
