Natural Cave, the mystery of Ancient Times
As most of the terrain in Danyang is composed of limestone, many limestone caves have been created underground. More than 70 underground caves have been discovered so far, but currently, only four natural caves are open to the public, including Ondaldonggul Cave, Gosudonggul Cave, Nodongdonggul Cave, and Cheondongdonggul Cave.
Ondaldonggul Cave (Natural Monument No. 261)
Danyang Ondaldonggul Cave is a limestone cave with a main and branch cave of 700 meters* in length and is documented in the ancient map of Yeongchun-hyun, Chungcheong-do, in the 14th volume of the 'Sinjeungdonggugyeojiseungnam'.
* A 450-meter section is open to the public.
Gosudonggul Cave (Natural Monument No. 256)
There are hundreds of unexplored limestone caves deep underground in the northern region of Danyang, which is mostly composed of limestone. In particular, the Natural Monument Gosudonggul Cave is 1,395 meters long* and is considered one of the most beautiful caves in Korea. Over the past 40 years, more than 22 million people have visited the cave, which is almost half the population of Korea. * The public section is 940 meters long.
The cave used to be called Gosu because the "Go" meant high and the "Su" meant bush, but now it is called "Gosu", the "Go" meaning old. The cave stays at 15 degrees year-round, so you'll need to wear extra layers in the summer and a heavy outer layer in the winter, and at least sneakers to be comfortable.
Nodongdonggul Cave (Natural Monument No. 262 - Restricted to the public)
A vertical cave with a steep slope of 40-50 degrees - Danyang Nodongdonggul Cave The cave is located near Nodongcheon Stream, where the Namhangang River stem enters the Namhangang River, and the total length of the cave is about 800 meters. Danyang Nodongdonggul Cave is formed of limestone, and the slope inside the cave is very steep.
Fragments of pottery have been found under the cave's vertical walls, and it is said that the cave served as a shelter for voluntary soldiers and as an artillery factory during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. Inside the cave, you'll find "Yongduam Rock," a pair of giant male and female dragons, and many other figures resembling male and female figures, and most of the stalagmites are in the shape of icicles. The 'Sacred Bell of Great King Seongdeok', which resembles a Western pumpkin, the 'Golden Rock', a world-class stalagmite that resembles the Cheonji Lake of Baekdusan Mountain, and the 'Underground White Jade Waterfall', which creates a huge waterfall when it rains, are particularly spectacular. The cave, which looks like it was sculpted out of mud, has a rustic, old-fashioned atmosphere and is home to more than 30 types of natural sculptures that are living a new life in the deep cave. Unfortunately, it is not open to the public for safety reasons due to the steep slope.
CheondongdonggulCave (Provincial Monument No. 19)
Danyang Cheondongdonggul Cave, a relatively short 470-meter-long limestone cave, was created in bedrock 450 million years ago and is designated as a local monument. Stalactites and stalagmites are produced very slowly due to the small amount of underground water that creates the limestone caves. As a result, you can easily observe small stalactites and stalagmites. As a result, it isn't as grandiose as the Gosudonggul Cave, but it's still very sophisticated and delicate. The 3-meter-long stalagmite "Arctic Icicle" is a spectacular sight, and the stalagmites and stone statues, such as the "Great General" that has been silently guarding the cave for countless years, are reminiscent of a huge nirvana. There are three ponds with clear groundwater, in which you can see 'grape-shaped spheroids', which look like grape clusters naturally formed in the water, and rocks called 'flower trays', which are a rare secondary product of calcite in the water that spreads and grows due to the phenomenon of water flowing from the side.
